Somehow, in the great scheme of things, I missed this story. It wasn't until seeing it recced on Crack Van that I had the pleasure of reading it.
Wow, just freaking wow! The emotions, the spoken (and unspoken) love... just... wow..

When trees grow too close their roots entwine, remaining twisted together in life and in death.
Such a beautiful line, in such a beautiful story. It is even more satisfying to re-read it because one knows it ends happily and yet the suspense builds in the re-reading and Napoleon's suffering is felt again.
